A roster looks like a plain grid, but every row is someone’s week. It decides when people get to sleep, see the people close to them and recover. In shift work the roster sits at the heart of everyday life, even though it is often dismissed as just a timetable.

A well-made roster feels fair and predictable. A poor one shows up as fatigue, rush and the feeling that life is out of your hands. Planning that looks like mere logistics has a direct effect on how people cope and how well they are.

Technically, this is an unusually fascinating problem. Working hours legislation and collective agreements are complex, rest periods and the right skills have to be in place, and costs have to stay under control. Solving the rules is hard, but making the tool so smooth and clear that it is genuinely pleasant to use is even harder. Most systems manage one or the other at best.

That is exactly why we are building Sutja. We want to handle the rules and the calculations so well that planning becomes humane and people cope better. When something that seems small, like shift planning, is done properly, it makes everyday life a little better for a lot of people. Even the name is a promise: in a well-built system, shifts slide smoothly into place (in Finnish, they “sutjahtaa”).
